About Ernest Renan
The French philosopher and scholar was the renowned author of the controversial book “The Life of Jesus.” Though many deemed his methods of historical research questionable, his radical ideas have spanned many years and impacted many scholars.
Early Life
Born at Tréguier Brittany to a family of fishermen, he attended the ecclesiastical seminary in Tréguier and trained as a priest. In 1840, he read philosophy at the seminary of Issy-les-Moulineaux and was drawn to the metaphysical ideas of Thomas Reid and Nicolas Malebranche. He abandoned priesthood.
Career & Controversy
In 1862, he became a professor of Hebrew at the College de France and authored “The Life of Jesus.” He described Jesus as a religious leader who was entirely human with no divine roots and resorted to deception to pull a following. His professorship was dismissed as a result but reinstated in 1870.
Death
In 1892, aged 69, he died after a short illness.

He married Cornelie Scheffer in 1856. They had 2 children.

The armoured cruiser, Ernest Renan, was named in memory of his works.
