About Ernest Giles
Australian explorer William Ernest Powell Giles oversaw five significant trips to South and Western Australia. He was the first person to go both ways across central and Western Australia's arid wasteland.
Early Years
After attending Christ's Hospital School, he traveled to Victoria in 1852, tried his hand on the goldfields without success, and eventually became a post office clerk in Melbourne. By 1861, he was in western New South Wales, where he led multiple expeditions to examine the pastoral land beyond the Darling River until 1865.
Expeditions
Due to the weather and reluctant crewmates, his first voyage to the Charlotte Waters Telegraph Station in August 1872 was a total disaster. With the passing of his colleague, Alfred Gibson, his subsequent effort was likewise unsuccessful. On August 23, 1876, he reached the telegraph line after setting out from Perth and traveling northeast before turning inland.
