About Erik Weihenmayer
He is a record setter who became the first blind man to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 2001. He also completed the summits of the seven highest mountains that can be found on the seven traditional continents, they include Kilimanjaro (in Tanzania), Vinson (in Antartica) and Mount Denali (in the U.S. state of Alaska).
Family and Education
He was born to Ed Weihenmayer and Ellen Suzanne Baker Weihenmayer. As a child, he was diagnosed with an eye disease called Retinoschisis. He studied at Hong Kong International School, Weston High School and Boston College. From the latter, he earned a degree in English.
He married Ellie Reeve, with whom he has two children.
Adventuring
He made his first highest climb on Mount Denali in 1995 and after that went on to conquer Mount Everest. This feat led to his appearance in the cover story of Time Magazine.
The American mountain climber and athlete organized the Adventure Team Challenge in 2006. The competition consisted of the disabled and non-disabled persons. His team won the competition multiple times. He completed other adventures like the Primal Quest and El Capitan.
His success resulted in him appearing on popular American television shows such as “Good Morning America” and the “Tonight Show”. He also starred in “High Ground”, an award-winning film directed by Mike Brown.
Association
He climbed to the north side of Mount Everest with the German Tibetologist Sabriye Tenberken.
Honors
In 2017, the Men’s Journal titled him as one of the best 25 most adventurous men for the past two and half decades.
Trivia
He is the author of the 2002 book “Touch the Top of the World: A Blind’s Man Journey to Climb Farther Than the Eye Can See”.
