About Erich Segal
Erich Segal was recognized as the author of the bestselling novel “Love Story”. He received the title of class poet and Salutatorian in Latin when he graduated from Harvard College in 1958.
Personal life and Education
He is the eldest child of three siblings. He attended Midwood High School and graduated from Harvard University with a master’s degree and doctorate in comparative literature.
He took his wedding vows with Karen James in 1975. By James, he fathered two children, including British author and journalist Francesca Segal.
Writing Career
The London, England-born author developed an interest in writing and narration in his childhood. He gained recognition from the first academic book he wrote, titled “Roman Laughter: The Comedy of Plautus”. He wrote a romantic story about some students from Harvard and Radcliffe but refused to release the book. He then convinced William Morris Agency and Lois Wallace to turn the story scripts into a novel. He took their advice and the novel was titled “Love Story”. The novel became one of the best works of fiction in the 1970s.

Segel also taught at Yale and served as a professor for a short period at Princeton and the University of Munich.
Honors
His novel “The Class”, which was published in 1985, won literary honor in France and Italy.
Death
He died of a heart attack at age 72. In his later life, he had battled Parkinson’s disease.
