About Erich Hartmann
Nicknamed “The Black Devil”, German military aviator Erich Hartmann is widely considered to be one of the most successful flying aces in aerial warfare history.
He fought in the Second World War, during which he is known to have shot down 345 Soviet aircraft and 7 American planes. In spite of his aerial victories, he had to surrender to the US Army following the German surrender.
He received a 25-year prison sentence, spending 10 of it in Soviet prison camps before his 1955 release. He went on to serve in the Bundeswehr, Germany’s unified armed forces.
Family Life
He was the son of Elisabeth Wilhelmine Machtholf and Alfred Erich Hartmann, a doctor. He had a younger brother called Alfred. He was married to a woman named Ursula Paetsch.
He never got to meet his first child, a son named Erich-Peter as he was born and he died before Hartmann’s release. Following his release, he had a daughter whom he named Ursula Isabel.
Achievements
He received a Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross in 1943.
