About Eric Kandel
Nobel Prize winner Eric Kandel is the founder of Columbia University’s Department of Neuroscience. The famous Austrian-American scientist has specialized in many fields including biochemistry and psychiatry. He’s best known for his research on the nerve cell.
He has also worked with many educational institutions such as the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the College of Physicians and Surgeons located at Columbia University. In addition to his works, Kandel has written many books including “Cellular Basis of Behaviour: An Introduction to Behavioural Neurobiology” and “Behavioural Bio of Aplysia: Origin & Evolution”.
Family
His parents are Charlotte Zimels and Hermann Kandel. He has been married to sociologist Denise Bystryn since 1956. They have raised two children.
Education
He studied at Harvard College and New York University School of Medicine.
Accolades
In 2000, he shared his Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Paul Greengard and Arvid Carlsson. Other awards that he has won include the Wolf Prize in Medicine, National Medal of Science and the Dickson Prize.
In 2006, his book titled “In Search of Memory: The Emergence of a New Science of Mind” won a Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
