About Eric Heiden
Eric Heiden is one of the iconic figures in speed skating. The American won a total of five gold medals at the Winter Olympics in 1980, which made him the most successful athlete at the event. Before his retirement, Heiden participated and won laurels at some top competitions like the World Allround Championships, and the World Sprint Championships.
Other Works
Aside from speed skating, the Wisconsin-born sportsman has also competed in some cycling events. A year after his record-breaking performance at the Olympics, he participated in the UCI Track Cycling World Championships. He has also participated in events like the Giro d'Italia, and the Tour de France.
The American also works as a physician. Through this profession, he has worked with the Sacramento Kings in the NBA, and the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs. Until 2014, he worked with the United States’ speed skating squad as a physician.
Family
He’s the brother of renowned cyclist Beth Heiden. This famous skater tied the knot with Karen Drews in 1995, and six years later they welcomed a child named Zoe.
Education
After Madison West High School, he joined the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He later enrolled at the University of California in San Diego, before moving to Stanford University, California.
Honors
He became a member of the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame in 1999. That same year, he was named in the “50 Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century” list by ESPN. He’s also a Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Famer.
Trivia
During his time as a speed skater, he was trained by America’s Dianne Holum.
At the 1980 Games, he created four new Olympic records.
