About Empress Dowager Cixi
Empress Dowager Cixi’s legacy has become a bone of contention amongst historians. Generally perceived by historians as a power-hungry tyrant who caused the downfall of the Qing Dynasty, she has found favor amongst later historians for maintaining political order during her 50-year reign. She became the Qing Dynasty’s empress dowager in August 1861 upon the ascension of her son, Tongzhi Emperor to the throne and did what she could to stay in power until 14 November 1908.
Family Life
She was born Xingzhen to a third-class duke named Huizheng. She became one of the official concubines of the Xianfeng Emperor in February 1854 and bore him an heir, Zaichun (the Tongzhi Emperor) two years later. Her nephew, Zaitian, became the next emperor (Guangxu Emperor) after Zaichun.
Achievements
She was honored with the Japan Empire’s Order of the Precious Crown.
Death
She passed away on November 15, 1908, at the Hall of Graceful Bird in Beijing.
