About Ellen Johnson
As the former president of the group American Atheists in 1955, activist Ellen Johnson is well known for her tenacious approach to fighting for the rights of atheists.
Early Life
Despite coming from a Christian family, the activist veered into atheism as she grew older. She earned a master's degree in political science in addition to her bachelor's degrees in environmental studies and political science from the New School for Social Research.
Career
Johnson joined the American Atheists organization in 1978 and became its president from 1955 to 2008. She later formed the Godless Americans Political Action Committee (GAMPAC) in 2002, which aimed to support the separation of church and state. Johnson was also the co-host of the TV show “The Atheist Viewpoint” in 1994.
In 2005, Johnson made an appearance on “Heaven – Where Is It? How Do We Get There?", an ABC special program.
