After moving to Hollywood in 1932, Ellen Corby worked with Hal Roach Studios, and RKO Studios as one of their script girls. She served in that position for over a decade before rising to fame in 1945 when she earned her first notable acting gig.
The American actress is best known for her performance as Esther "Grandma" Walton in the popular television show titled “The Waltons” which premiered on CBS. Her other popular role was in the 1948 film “I Remember Mama” where she brought life into the Aunt Trina character.
Personal Life
Her maiden name was Ellen Hansen and was born to Danish immigrants. Between 1934 and 1944, she was married to Francis Corby, a cinematographer.
Awards
She won the Emmy Awards thrice for her role in “The Waltons” series. She also received a Golden Globe Award for her performance on “I Remember Mama” which also earned her an Academy Award nomination.

Corby was trained in transcendental meditation.
Her last acting role was in 1997’s “A Walton Easter”.
