About Elizabeth of Russia
Elizabeth of Russia was the Empress of Russia from 1741 to 1762. To ascend the throne, she overthrew her great-nephew, Ivan VI who was then just an infant with his mother as a regent. She continues to be famous for three main reasons: her refusal to execute anyone during her reign; her opposition to policies by the state of Prussia; and her immense contributions to the Russian Age of Enlightenment especially through architecture. She declared Peter III, the son of her sister, Anna as her heir.
Family Life
Her mother, Catherine I was the second wife of her father. Catherine served as a regent from 1725 until her death two years later. Although Elizabeth was engaged to the first cousin of Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, Charles Augustus, the wedding never happened as her fiancé died a few weeks prior to the nuptials. She went on to have a long-term affair with a Ukrainian man called Alexis Razumovsky.
Death
She died on January 5, 1762 after suffering a stroke.
