Elizabeth I of England was Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603. She was the fifth and the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty.

She was imprisoned by her half-sister and former Queen, Mary, for a year on suspicion of supporting Protestant rebels, before she became Queen. She was the Supreme Governor of the English Protestant church. England's defeat of the Spanish Armada fleet (1588) is still one of the greatest military victories in English history. Many famous writers and artists created their body of work during her reign, such as William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe.
