About Ehud Olmert
Ehud Olmert is an Israeli politician and lawyer who was the 12th Prime Minister of Israel between 2006-2009. He was previously the mayor of Jerusalem from 1993-2003.
Early Life
Olmert’s parents, Bella and Mordechai were members of a Jewish militant group that fought for the establishment of Israel as a democratic state. He attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem where he earned degrees in philosophy, psychology, and law. Olmert later opened a law partnership before serving in the Israeli military.
Career
Olmert was an active politician and a member of the Knesset, Israel’s legislature, where he was re-elected seven consecutive times until he decided to run for mayor of Jerusalem in 1993. Three years after his mayoral term had ended, he was appointed Acting Prime Minister, and then eventually Prime Minister of Israel.
Controversies
Throughout his political career, Olmert was brought up in a series of corruption and bribery allegations. In 2008, he stepped down from his role and was eventually succeeded by Benjamin Netanyahu. After a long investigation, he was accused on three counts of corruption. As a result, Olmert received a suspended one-year prison sentence in 2012. He was sentenced to prison two years later after being indicted for taking bribes. The former Israeli prime minister was released in 2017 after serving 16 months.
