Background
Born Jay John Fox in 1883, Edwin Carewe attended the universities of Texas and Missouri briefly to study theatre. He hitched a ride to New York in 1910, where he changed his name to Edwin Carewe to honor legendary stage actor Edwin Booth.
Career
Carewe started out as a stage actor and redirected his passion to directing. He worked with huge studios such as MGM, Universal Studios, and Paramount Pictures. His directorial debut was the 1914 film “Across the Pacific” and went on to direct films such as “Cora”, “The House of Gold”, “Rio Grande”, “Ramona”, “Evangeline”, and his last film in 1934 “Are We Civilized?” He produced and directed “Resurrection”, a 1931 film which starred John Boles, Lupe Vélez, Nance O’Neil, and William Keighley.
Death
The filmmaker died of a heart-related disease in 1940. He was 56 years old.
Personal Life
Also notable were his multiple marriages. He tied the knot with Mary Jane Croft in 1909. After his first divorce, he married actress Mary Akin. He had five children, including actress Violette Carewe.
