Edward Witten has gained popularity through his work in the fields of mathematical and theoretical physics. The American physicist’s research has been on theories such as string theory, supersymmetric quantum field theories and quantum gravity. He has been a professor at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study. He has received credit as the practical founder of M-theory.
Family Life
He is the son of theoretical physicist Louis Witten and his wife, Lorraine Wollach. He has been the husband of fellow physicist and Princeton University professor, Chiara Nappi since 1979. Their marriage has produced one son and two daughters. Their daughters are Princeton University neuroscientist Ilana B. Witten and the University of Washington’s biostatistician Daniela Witten.
Achievements
His accolades include the Fields Medal, Harvey Prize, Kyoto Prize, National Medal of Science and Albert Einstein Award.
Trivia
He has been a member of the Americans for Peace’s board of directors.
