Edward Harkness’ name may have gone into obscurity in recent times but he was an invaluable source of wealth for philanthropic projects in the early 20th century. The American philanthropist donated to the arts, the medical field and to educational institutions.
Prior to committing to philanthropy full-time (which he could afford to do thanks to his inheritance from his father and brother), he had worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a railroad director. Notable receivers of his benevolence include St. Paul’s School, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University, Columbia University and Harvard University.
Family Life
His father was Stephen V. Harkness, a founding member of Standard Oil. He had three other brothers, including Charles W. Harkness who left Edward with so much wealth after his death.
He was married to Mary Stillman in 1904 and became the son-in-law of Thomas E. Stillman, a wealthy New York attorney.
