About Edward Gibbon
Edward Gibbon was a British parliamentarian, historian, and writer. His most well-known work, "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," was published in six different volumes from 1776 to 1788. It is very famous among many modern religious literature groups.
Background & Early Life
Gibbon was from Putney, Surrey, and was the only surviving child of his parents' seven children. He was often ill during his childhood. Gibbon's mother neglected him, and it was his aunt, Catherine Porten, who catered for him mostly. He often referred to Catherine as the mother of his mind. She is said to have been the first person to introduce Gibbon to reading and book knowledge. By age 12, Gibbon could read extensively for over 3 hours and put his mind to solving chronological problems.
Romance
He fell in love with a pastor's daughter, Suzanne Curchod, in the 1750s. However, because of his father's opposition to the relationship and his religious duties, Gibbon ended the romance in 1764.
Legacy
Gibbon's thesis stated that Christianity caused the fall of the Roman Empire. However, most modern scholars have disagreed with his explanations even though they use some of his statements to antagonize Christianity.
Death
Gibbon passed away in January 1794 after being diagnosed with hydrocele testis.
