About Edward Elgar
It has been decades since British composer Edward Elgar passed away but his classical music continues to live on in both international and British concert repertoire. Having been influenced by continental European music, he did not get his breakthrough until he was in his forties.
His most popular compositions include “Pomp and Circumstances Marches”, “Enigma Variations” and “The Dream of Gerontius”.
Family Life
He was the fourth of the seven children of Ann Greening and William Henry Elgar. He was married to Caroline Alice Roberts, a poet and author of fiction who later managed his music career. They had a daughter named Carice Irene.
Achievements
He was a member of the Order of Merit and a recipient of the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society.
Death
He died on 23 February 1934 aged 76.
