About Edward Abbey
Environmental activist Edward Abbey worked at a number of national parks as a ranger before starting his career as an author. Known for his interesting non-fictions and essay collections, Abbey published his first book in 1954 which was entitled “Jonathan Troy”.
He gained international exposure in 1975 after publishing one of his most popular works titled “The Monkey Wrench Gang”. His autobiography dubbed “Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness” was released in 1968.
Family
He was the son of Paul Revere Abbey and Mildred Postlewait. In 1978, he married Clarke Cartwright, his fifth wife. The couple raised two kids named Benjamin C. Abbey and Rebecca Claire Abbey.
Education
Abbey read English and philosophy at the University of New Mexico. He also attended Stanford University.
Trivia
During his time as a ranger, he worked at the Arches National Monument and the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.
He was the subject of the 1993 documentary “Edward Abbey: A Voice in the Wilderness”.
