About Edoardo Mangiarotti
He is undoubtedly one of the most successful Italian Olympian and the greatest swordsman in the history of fencing. Edoardo Mangiarotti amassed 13 Olympic medals and 26 world championship medals.
Early Life
Born into a prominent fencing family, he was nurtured as a child to follow in his father’s footsteps. At the age of eleven, he was already a junior national champion and was a senior champion at the age of sixteen.
Achievements
Edoardo made his first Olympic appearance in 1936 in Berlin, where he grabbed the gold medal for Italy at the age of seventeen. This fencing legend won gold the next year at the World Championships in Paris. Edoardo and his brother Dario made their country proud in the 1952 Olympic Games at Helsinki, winning three gold medals and three silver. He won three more gold medals at the 1856 Melbourne and 1960 Rome Olympic Games.
At the age of 41 and as the oldest member of the Italian team, Edoardo won the gold medal for Team épée in the 1960 Olympics which was his last. He attended other Olympic Games as an administrator and was honored in 2003 with a Platinum Wreath as “the greatest Fencer in that sport's history”.
