About Edmund Hillary
Edmund Hillary was a renowned New Zealand mountaineer and explorer who gained international prominence for being the first to climb to the summit of Mount Everest, along with Tenzing Norgay from Nepal. He later founded the international not-for-profit humanitarian organization the Himalayan Trust, with which he used in improving the lives of the people of Sherpa from Nepal.
Personal Life
He was the son of Gertrude and Percival Augustus Hillary. He was married twice. From 1953 to 1975, he was married to his first wife Louise Mary Rose, with whom he had three children, including Peter Hillary. His second marriage was to June Mulgrew. The marriage lasted from 1989 until his death in 2008.
Trivia
In 1975, while traveling to visit him in Nepal, his first wife Louise and their young daughter died in a plane crash.
The Time magazine included him in their list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
