About Edmund Barton
Edmund Barton was an Australian politician who was instrumental in the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia. He also played a pivotal role in the preparations of the country’s constitution which was ratified in 1900.
With the Protectionist Party, he became Australia’s first Prime Minister in 1901 after his party won the country’s first-ever federal election. He resigned from his position in 1903 and helped to establish the High Court of Australia. For the rest of his career, he served as a Justice in the court.
Family
He was one of the children of William Barton and Mary Louisa Whydah, and spent his childhood with his eleven siblings. He married Jane Ross in 1877 and together they raised six kids.
Education
He attended Sydney Grammar School, and Fort Street High School before enrolling at the University of Sydney at age 16.
Recognitions
Barton received his knighthood in 1902. He was also decorated with the Japanese Grand Cordon, Order of the Rising Sun.
Trivia
During his term as the Prime Minister of Australia, he introduced the Immigration Restriction Act 1901 which restricted immigrants to the country.
He was also an active sportsman and participated in events like cricket and rowing.
