About Edith Wilson
Edith Wilson, originally called Edith Bolling Galt, was one of America's most famous presidential wives. She was the USA's first lady between 1915 and 1921 and was President Woodrow Wilson's second wife. In addition, she was known for fulfilling various presidential administrative duties for President Woodrow Wilson when he suffered a severe stroke in his second term.
Marriage to President
President Woodrow was heartbroken at the death of his first wife in August 1914. However, Woodrow found love again when he met her in March 1915. Despite concerns from his advisers that early remarriage after the death of his first wife would alienate American voters, they married on December 18, 1915, in her Washington residence.
Presidential Administration
After President Woodrow suffered a major stroke in October 1919, she and others in the government's inner circle kept the American people in the dark about his illness. However, when it became evident that the President was not performing his routine duties, many critics claimed Edith was in charge of the country.
Indeed, from the onset of the President's illness until he retired from office in 1925, she helped him fill out administrative paperwork, was given access to confidential material and was tasked with encrypting and decrypting political messages.
Death
She lived for 89 years and died from congestive heart failure on December 28, 1961.
