About Earl Campbell
After some excellent displays at the college level, Earl Campbell was selected into the National Football League in 1978 as a signee of the Houston Oilers. After his first season with the team, he received the NFL Rookie of the Year award.
After six years with the Oilers, the American football legend, who played as a running back, joined the New Orleans Saints. His running style and aggressiveness made him one of the greatest players to ever play in the league.
Personal Life
At the age of 11 years, he lost his dad, Bert Campbell. He was raised by his mum, Ann Campbell, alongside ten other siblings. In 1980, he married Reuna Smith and their two sons are called Tyler and Christian.
Education
In 1973, during his time at John Tyler High School, he was named the best high school player in the United States. He continued his education at the University of Texas at Austin.
Accolades
He won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award in 1979. For three years in a row, starting from 1978, he was adjudged the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He became a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1990, and was selected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame the following year.
Health challenges
In 2009, he was said to be suffering from spinal stenosis. He has also suffered from arthritis.

The University of Texas’ football team has retired his number 20 jersey.
