About Douglas Hofstadter
Douglas Hofstadter has been an important voice in inter-disciplinary research since the early 1980s. He has done research work in the fields of cognitive science, comparative literature, physics and philosophy of mind. He started serving as the Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Comparative Literature at Indiana University’s College of Arts and Sciences in 1988.
He is known for his formulation of what have become known as Hofstadter’s law and Hofstadter’s butterfly. He is also famous as the author of the books “Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid” and “I Am a Strange Loop”.
Family Life
His first wife, Carol Ann Brush died from a brain tumor in 1993, after eight years of marriage. She bore him two children. He remarried in 2012 to Baofen Lin.
Achievements
He received a National Book Award, a Pulitzer Prize and the American Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award.
Trivia
He wrote a column in the “Scientific American” magazine titled “Metamagical Themas” from 1981 to 1983.
