About Dorothy Dandridge
Dorothy Dandridge first garnered attention as half of the song-and-dance act duo, The Wonder Children, which later got rebranded to The Dandridge Sisters with the addition of Etta Jones in 1934.
From 1935 to 1953, she had numerous uncredited and small roles in a variety of films. She had her big break in the film industry through the titular role in the 1953 box-office hit, “Carmen Jones”. She is also known for her role as Bess in the musical film, “Porgy and Bess”.
Family Life
She was the daughter of actress Ruby Dandridge and Cyril Dandridge. Her sister, Vivian, was the other half of The Wonder Child and a third of The Dandridge Sisters.
She was married twice; first to dancer Harold Nicholas, with whom she had her only daughter, Harolyn, and for the second time to Jack Denison. She also had a four-year affair with Otto Preminger, a director.
Achievements
She became the first woman of color to earn an Academy Award for “Best Actress” after her role in “Carmen Jones”. The same role also garnered her a BAFTA Award nomination.
