He was the last child of his parents Elizabeth and James Crisp.
Acting and Filmmaking Career
Crisp sang in the Grand Opera in New York for a year and became a stage director the next year. Between 1908 and 1930, he directed lots of films and also made appearances in more than ninety silent films.
“The Birth of a Nation” and Other Works
In 1915, he was cast as General Ulysses S. Grant in the film "The Birth of a Nation", directed by D.W Griffith. The film, which now evokes a lot of controversy, starred Lillian Gish, Henry B. Walthall and Mae Marsh.
He later worked extensively with Griffith as an assistant director. His first directed film was "Little Country Mouse" which was produced in 1914. In later years, he directed several films such as "The Navigator", and "Don Q, Son of Zorro". The director eventually left directing and went back to full-time acting.
Awards
In 1942, he bagged the Academy Award for "Best Supporting Actor" for his role in 'How Green Was My Valley".

Trivia
His last directional film was "The Runaway Bride" released in 1930. The film starred Mary Astor, Lloyd Hughes, and Paul Hurst.
