Donald Brashear is a well-known former hockey player who played for a number of teams, including the Vancouver Canucks and the Philadelphia Flyers.
Professional career
Donald Maynard Brashear played for five different NHL teams. For six seasons, he was among the NHL's top penalty-minute scorers, finishing 15th all-time. As of 2022, he holds the record for most penalty minutes in a single season with the Vancouver Canucks, which he achieved in 1997–98.
During the 1999–2000 NHL season, he was slashed in the skull by Marty McSorley, resulting in one of the well-publicized incidences of on-ice violence in NHL history.
Personal life
With his then-partner Gabrielle Desgagne, he had two boys, Jordan and Jackson.
Trivia
Brashear went to Val-Bélair, Quebec, when he was eight years old, and settled into a new foster home. He began playing hockey with his new siblings after he arrived.
Brashear sold baked bread and trash bags door-to-door to help pay for hockey. He also worked as a paper boy.
With three different minor ice hockey clubs from Quebec City, he competed in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments in 1984, 1985, and 1986.
On two distinct occasions, Brashear has represented the United States. At the 1997 World Championship, he made his international debut, scoring two goals and adding five points in eight games to help the United States finish sixth.
