About Don Zimmer
Don Zimmer started his professional career in the Eastern Shore League but shot to fame with MLB’s side Brooklyn Dodgers which he joined in 1954. Used as an infielder, the American baseball legend helped the Dodgers to win two World Series before leaving in 1960. Throughout his playing career, he starred for quite a number of teams including the New York Mets, the Washington Senators and the Toei Flyers in Japan.
Post retirement
Zimmer entered into coaching after drawing the curtains down on his playing career. He began his career with the Montreal Expos in 1971. He was best known for his time with the New York Yankees where he won four World Series championships.
He also worked as a manager and spent some successful years with a number of MLB sides including the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres.
Family
He tied the knot with Soot Carol Jean Bauerle in 1951. Their children are Thomas and Donna.
Achievements
During his playing days, he was selected into two All-Star teams. He was named the National League Manager of the Year in 1989. Zimmer is also a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.
Trivia
Aside from the United States, he also played in countries like Cuba and Puerto Rico.
In Mexico, he was nicknamed "The little soldier (El Soldadito)". He was also known by the alias "Popeye".
His two books were titled “The Zen of Zim: Baseballs, Beanballs and Bosses” and “Zim: A Baseball Life”.
