About Don José de San Martín
Don José de San Martín is remembered for being instrumental in the fight for independence from Spain by South America. The Argentine general fought in the Peninsular War and the Spanish American Wars of Independence, during which he was able to liberate Chile from the indirect rule of the Spanish monarchy.
He served as the Protector of Peru (having partially seized control of Lima) from July 1821 to September 1822 and spent the rest of his life as the founder of the freedom of Peru. He had previously led the Argentine War of Independence and went on to serve as the Governor of the Province of Cuyo.
Family Life
He was the son of Juan de San Martin, a military man who served the Spanish Crown. He married Maria de los Remedios de Escalada y la Quintana. They had one daughter whom they named Maria de las Mercedes Tomasa de San Martin.
Death
He died on August 17, 1850 at the age of 72.
