About Domingo Faustino Sarmiento
The 7th president of Argentina believed that the road to national development was public education. Guided by the U.S. educational structure, he set about building schools, universities and teacher training centres to foster this dream. He died at the age of 77.
Early Life
Born into humble beginnings, he was raised in San Juan, Argentina. He received minimal formal education and was largely self-taught. Steeped in classical books, he started life as a school teacher in his teens and later turned to politics.
Political Activism & Exile
In 1840, his aggressive political views against the dictatorship of Rosas led to his exile to Chile. During this period, he published one of the most profound books of Spanish America, “Facundo: Civilization and Barbarism.” The book was a protest against the tyranny of Rosas.
Return to Argentina
After the overthrow of Rosas, he returned to Argentina and in 1962, served as governor in the Mitre government. He passed the “Statutory Law of Public Education” which mandated children to attend school. He eventually became president from 1868 to 1974. During this period, he built more schools, promoted agriculture, commerce and mining.
Personal Life
He married widow, Benita Pastoriza and adopted her son. The couple divorced in 1857.
Legacy
At the Argentine Embassy in Washington D.C., a building has been named after him.
