Born in Milan, he was raised by relatives after losing his parents while he was still young.
As Film Director
For over four decades starting from the 1940s, he dedicated his life to directing numerous films, including “Belle ma povere,” “Il profeta,” “Il giovane normale,” “Primo amore,” and “Giovani e belli.” Notable among his most successful are “A Difficult Life,” “Scent of a Woman” and “Opiate ’67.” In his directorial career, he worked with such stars as Alberto Sordi, Lea Massari, Vittorio Gassman, Alessandro Momo, Marisa Allasio and Maurizio Arena.
Accolade
He received the Golden Lion-Honorary Award in 2002.
For his work “Scent of a Woman”, he earned 1976 César Award for Best Foreign Film. The film starred Agostina Belli, Vittorio Gassman, and Moira Orfei. Based on Givanni Arpino’s “Il buio e il miele”, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Writing, Screenplay Adapted From Other Material”.
