About Denis Potvin
Denis Charles Potvin is the former team captain of the New York Islanders and is best known for leading his team to four consecutive Stanley Cup tournaments in the early 1980s. When he retired in 1988, he was the top-scoring defenseman in NHL history.
Early Life and Professional Career
The Canadian-born learned how to skate when he was three years old. He had an impressive amateur career before being drafted in 1973 to the Islanders. He quickly became a star with the team, winning the “Rookie of the Year” title for the 1973/1974 season. He retired in 1988 and became a studio analyst for SportsChannel America. In 2019, he retired from sports broadcasting.
Fun Facts and Achievements
Potvin was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
His #5 jersey was retired by the Islanders in 1992, the first of such in the hockey league.
