He was born and raised in Kensington, London. The actor first enrolled at Malvern College and attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. However, due to his poor performance, he was dismissed from the academy after his first term.

He made his acting debut in 1949 in the comedy film “Dear Mr. Prohack.” He then went on to play a wide variety of roles in many films, including the abortionist in “Alfie” and Mr. Emerson in “A Room with a View.”
The Marcus Brody character in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and Coleman in “Trading Places” were his famous roles.
