About David Irving
David Irving’s career has been marred with lots of controversies which began during his days as the editor of University of London’s Carnival Times. The English historian and author is widely known as a believer of the Holocaust denial conspiracy theory. He has firmly argued that German politician, Adolf Hitler, was not responsible for the killing of the Jews during the Second World War.
His ideologies can be seen in books like “Hitler's War”, “Goebbels: Mastermind of the Third Reich”, and “The Destruction of Dresden”.
Law suit
In 1996, Irving sued historian Deborah Lipstadt and the publishing firm Penguin Books. The suit was about Lipstadt’s book titled “Denying the Holocaust” where the writer described Irving as a falsifier and Holocaust denier.
Irving later lost the case and was asked to pay around £2 million to the publishing company to cover their trial cost. The legal tussle inspired the 2016 film titled “Denial”.
Personal Life
His dad, John James Cawdell Irving, was a member of the UK’s Royal Navy. His mother, Beryl Irving worked as a writer. He has a twin brother named Nicholas. His other siblings are called Jennifer and John.
His 20-years marriage to María del Pilar Stuyck ended in 1981. They had four children together. He started a romantic affair with Bente Hogh, a model, in 1992. They welcomed a child in 1994.
Education
He had his A-level education at Brentwood School. He also attended the University College London to study Economics but dropped out due to financial challenges.
Trivia
He was banned from entering New Zealand in 2004 by then deputy Prime Minister, Michael Cullen.
