He enrolled in the University of North Carolina, Emory University, and Vanderbilt University. By 1940, he was the United Press's bureau chief in Charlotte. He is praised for his books "Washington Goes To War" (1988) and "Everyone Is Entitled To My Opinion" published in 1998.
He received ten Emmy Awards and three George Foster Peabody awards for excellence in broadcasting.
