About Dave Cowens
As a key member of the Boston Celtics in the 1970s and a champion of the NBA in 1974 and 1976, Dave Cowens earned a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 1971 and the Most Valuable Player award in 1973. In 1991, he was admitted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Background
He played for Florida State University as a student. He was chosen by the Boston Celtics with the fourth overall pick in the 1970 NBA Draft, defying several detractors.
Cowens averaged 14.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in his final season with the Celtics (1979–80). Prior to his retirement as a player in 1980, he coached the Celtics in 1979–1980. He has held coaching positions in the WNBA, CBA, and NBA.
In 1978, Cowens married Deby, with whom he has two daughters.
