He learnt how to play the piano from his piano teacher mother, Elizabeth Ivey. His cattle rancher father’s name was Peter Howard Burbeck. For seven decades, he was married to Lola Whitlock, a jazz lyricist. They had six children.

He was the recipient of awards such as “BBC Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2007, the “Kennedy Center Honors”, and “Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards”.
Death
Heart failure was the cause of his demise, which happened on December 5, 2012.
