About Danny Murtaugh
Danny Murtaugh was an American second baseman, field manager and coach in Major League Baseball (MLB). The sportsman was a two-time World Series champion manager. He is best known for his 29-year career as a player and manager with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Background
He played sports as a child and even received scholarship offers, but he rejected them since he couldn't afford his personal upkeep expenses. He joined his father at the Sun Ship shipyards after finishing high school.
He was married to Kate Clark.
Career
The Phillies bought his contract in 1941, while in the middle of his second straight season with the Houston Buffaloes. Despite spending only three months of that season in the major leagues, he led the National League with 18 base stealers.
He joined the Army in August 1943. Three combat stars later, in 1946, he made his baseball comeback. He played in six games for Philadelphia before being sent back to the Cardinals.
He managed the Triple-A Charleston Senators and the New Orleans Pelicans after his playing career ended. He went back to coaching the Pirates in 1956. He managed the Pirates for twelve seasons, nine of them with a winning record.
