Daniel Inouye was an American politician remembered for serving as a United States Senator from Hawaii from 1963 until he died in 2012. He was also known for being the President pro tempore of the United States Senate from 2010 until his death.
Family Life
He was married twice. His first marriage was to Maggie Shinobu Awamura. The marriage lasted from 1949 until Maggie's death in 2006. His second marriage was to Irene Hirano in 2008. He and Irene remained together until his demise. He had only one child named Kenny.
Achievements
For his extraordinary service during World War II, he received a number of military decorations, including a Purple Heart, a Medal of Honor and a World War II Victory Medal.
In 2013, he was honored posthumously with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Trivia
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and fought in World War II, during which he lost his right arm.
Upon his election to the United States House of Representatives in 1959, he became the first Japanese American to ever serve in the United States Congress.
