About Daniel Ellsberg
Daniel Ellsberg’s name will forever be associated with his 1973 espionage charge. He was an economist, political activist and former analyst for the United States Army who served the military as a strategic analyst hired by the RAND Corporation in 1958.
He gained notoriety for leaking the infamous Pentagon Papers, which contained a report by the US Defense Department detailing the United States’ 2-decade long involvement in Vietnam. He was charged with espionage but eventually eluded jail time. He was also known for his formulation of the Ellsberg paradox and decision theory.
Personal Life
He was raised in Detroit, Michigan by his Christian Science-practicing parents, Adele Charsky and Harry Ellsberg. He earned a PhD in economics in 1962 from Harvard University. He had two children from his first marriage to Carol Cummings, which lasted for thirteen years. He also had a son from his 1970 marriage to Patricia Marx.
Achievements
He received the Ron Ridenhour Courage Prize, Olof Palme Prize, Gandhi Peace Award and Right Livelihood Award.
