Daniel Auteuil is a French actor and film/theatre director. He is one of the most respected and highly paid French actors of his era.
Personal Life
Daniel was born in French Algeria on January 24, 1950 and was raised in Avignon and Nancy, France. He has two daughters, one each with Anne Jousset and Emmanuelle Beart. In 2006, he got married to sculptor Aude Ambroggi. His eldest daughter, Aurore Auteuil, who is an actress as well, has appeared in a number of films, including “Hey Good Looking!”, “The Closet”, and “Confidences trop intimes”.
Acting Career
From 1974, Auteuil has played in major French movies. He appeared in two of Gerard Pires’s films, “L’Agression” in 1974 and “Attention les Yeux!” in 1975. In the early 2000s, he featured in “To Paint Love or Make it”, “Vajont”, “Sade” and “Strange Crime”. The latter, which was directed by Italian filmmaker Roberto Ando, saw Auteuil star alongside Anna Mouglalis, Greta Scacchi, and Serge Merlin.
Auteuil was cast as Napoleon in Paoli Virzi’s 2006 historical comedy drama “Napoleon and Me”. In 2016, he starred alongside in Toni Servillo, Connie Nielsen and Lambert Wilson in Roberto Ando’s thriller drama “The Confessions”·
Film directing
Daniel Auteuil wrote and directed three films between 2011 and 2013: “The Well-Digger's Daughter”, “Marius” and “Fanny”.
Awards
The French actor and filmmaker has won the European Film Awards-Best Actor twice, for “Un Coeur en Hiver” in 1993 and “Cache” in 2003.
He is also a two-time winner of the César Award for Best Actor. The first award came in 1987 for his role in “Jean de Florette”, while the second came in 2000 for his role in “The Girl on the Bridge”.
As of 2022, he has been nominated 12 times for the César Award, winning twice.
In 1993, he won the European Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in “A Heart in Winter”.
At the European Film Awards in 2005, he picked up the “Best Actor Award” for his performance in Michael Haneke’s 2005 psychological thriller film “Caché”.
Auteuil won the 1987 BAFTA Award-Best Actor in a Supporting Role for “Jean de Florette”.
Trivia
