About Dan Rowan
Dan Rowan was an American comedian best known for featuring in the TV show “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” with Dick Martin. He won an Emmy award for “Outstanding Variety or Musical Series” in 1969 for his role.
Early Years
Rowan was born to carnival performers near a small town in Oklahoma. He was orphaned at age 11 and spent the rest of his early years in a children’s home and later a foster family. After graduating from high school, he moved to Los Angeles and got a job at Paramount Pictures. After a year of networking, he became the studio’s youngest staff writer.
Military Service
Rowan enlisted in the US Air Force as a fighter pilot during World War II. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and Purple Heart during his time in the Air Force.
Comedy Career
He returned to Los Angeles after his stint in the army and formed a comedy duo with Dick Martin. They made their first comedy film “Once Upon a Horse” before starting their hit comedy show “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.”
Personal Life and Death
Rowan married Phyllis Mathis and had three children. He later married Adriana Van Ballegooyen and then to Joanna Young. He retired in the 1980s and passed away from lymphoma in 1987.
