About Curt Gowdy
Curtis Edward Gowdy was a known professional sports commentator from the 1940s to the 1980s. He covered games in the American Football League and the National Football League, Major League Baseball, and college football and basketball. He was also the presenter of ABC's "The American Sportsman".
Family
He exchanged wedding vows with Geraldine Dawkins in June 1949 and they became parents to three children, Cheryl, Curtis, and Trevor.
Education
He is an alumnus of the Central State College and the University of Oklahoma.
Career Highlights
After Gowdy graduated in 1942, he enlisted in the army where he served as a Second Lieutenant. He first appeared on the broadcasting scene in Cheyenne in November 1943, providing commentary on a six-man college football game. There, he discovered that he had a talent for broadcasting and went on to work as a sportswriter at the KFBC radio station and the Wyoming Eagle newspaper. He later became a sports editor.
He spent many years in Cheyenne and worked for Oklahoma's KOMA radio in 1945 as a broadcaster of Oklahoma college football and Oklahoma State college basketball games.
The Wyoming-born also broadcasted the baseball games of the Texas league Oklahoma City Indians on station KOCY. He worked with the New York Yankees in 1949.
In the mid-1970s, he hosted and produced the television series "The Way It Was", from 1974 to 1978. He later gave historic commentary for the weekly television sports show "Inside the NFL" on HBO.
Awards
Gowdy was awarded the Ford C Frick Award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.
He was also inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Rose Bowl Hall of fame in 2005.
Death
He died of Leukemia on February 20, 2006, aged 86.
