About Clifford Roberts
The Masters Golf Tournament was co-founded and chaired by American investment dealer and golf administrator Clifford Roberts, who made news by opting to blow his brains out on his own property.
Background
After assaulting the principal of the school, he and his older brother dropped out of school before graduating. He was a successful traveling apparel salesman and a Wall Street stockbroker.
The Augusta National Golf Club was established by Roberts and Bobby Jones in 1932. Between 1931 until 1976, he presided as the club's chairman.
Roberts and Jones launched the Masters Tournament two years after its founding (played annually at Augusta National). From 1934 through 1976, he presided as chairman of the Masters Tournament.
Death
On September 29, 1977, he shot himself on his property in Augusta despite having cancer and a stroke.
Honors
In 1978, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
