Undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, Claudio Arrau left a lasting impact on the music industry. A child prodigy, the Chilean pianist enjoyed a stellar career spanning over seven decades, making a remarkable musical genius.
Early Life
This Chilean musician is believed to have started reading music before he could read words. He gave his first performance at the age of five, playing selections from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven’s works. By the age of ten, it was clear he was a bundle of talent and was given a ten-year scholarship to study under the famous German composer Martin Krause in Berlin.
Career
Young Arrau performed before royalties in Europe and made his London tour in 1914. He completed Mozart keyboard works over 5 recitals. By 1938, he played a cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas and concertos in Mexico City, making him one of the few authorities on Beethoven in the 20th century.
Major Accolades
He won the International Prize for Pianists in Geneva in 1927.
Arrau received the Gold Medal in Appreciation from the Chilean government in 1944.
He was conferred a honorary degree from the University of Chile in 1949.
In 1958, he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society medal.
He was awarded The International Music Award by UNESCO in 1983.
Claudio Arrau León received the Highest Distinction Award from the Inter-American Music Council and the Organization of American States in 1984.
Death
He died 1991, in Mürzzuschlag, Austria at the age of 88. The cause of death was due to complications from a surgery that he underwent.
