About Clara Schumann
Clara Schumann was a German pianist, piano teacher and composer. Her career in concert lasted for 61 years and she is considered amongst the Romantic era’s most outstanding pianists. Her compositions ranged from solo piano pieces to chamber music, piano concerto and choral pieces. She also performed on tour extensively within various European cities from the age of eleven. As a piano teacher, she taught at the Frankfurt-based Dr. Hoch’s Konservatorium. She was a long-time friend of composer Johannes Brahms.
Family Life
She was the daughter of pianist, soprano and piano teacher Mariane Bargiel and piano and voice teacher, Johann Friedrich Wieck. She was married to composer Robert Schumann, with whom she had eight children, from 1840 until her death in 1856. Her daughter, Eugenie also became a pianist.
Death
She died at the age of 76 from a stroke on May 20, 1896.
