About Clair Cameron Patterson
Clair Cameron Patterson was a renowned geochemist who is credited for being the first person to give a more accurate estimation of Earth’s age at 4.55 billion years.
Background
In 1943, Patterson graduated with a degree in chemistry from Grinnell College and later to the University of Iowa, where he received his master’s degree in molecular spectroscopy. Following the Second World War, he earned his PhD at the University of Chicago and eventually became one of the founding members of the California Institute of Technology’s geochemistry program in 1952.
Works
In 1956, Patterson published the paper, “Age of Meteorites and the Earth”, where he calculated the age of the planet. He also played a huge role in protests against lead poisoning with his written work, “Contaminated and Natural Lead Environments of Man.”
Family & Death
He married Lorna McCleary and had four children with her. Patterson died in 1995.
Awards
He was a recipient of the 1973 J. Lawrence Smith Medal, the 1980 V.M. Goldschmidt Award, and the 1995 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.
