About Cindy Blackman
Cindy Blackman is an American jazz and rock musician and drummer. She hails from a family of musicians and related arts. The Ohio native started playing drums at age seven, growing a sudden interest in drums during a visit to a friend. She had a drum set from parents and played in her school’s band.
Personal Life
In 2010 at a ceremony in Hawaii, she tied the knot with American guitarist Carlos Santana.
Cindy Santana has asserted her vexation against gender bias and unequal opportunity.
Education and influence
Cindy enrolled in Hartt School of Music, Connecticut, at age eleven, and then attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Her interest in jazz was also triggered after listening to American jazz drummer Max Roach.
In New York, she met many drummers from whom she learnt a lot about the music industry.
Career
Cindy Blackman was featured in “Jazz Stars of the Future” on New York’s WKCR FM in 1984. She came out with “Cold Red” and “Arcane” in 1992 and “Works on Canvas” in 1999, among several others.
She recorded two albums in tribute to American jazz drummer Tony Williams, her mentor. Those two albums were “Another Lifetime” in 2010 and “Spectrum” in 2012.
She has collaborated with Reid, Lovano, and Medeski and many others playing varying roles in her songs and drumming.
