About Christoph Schönborn
Christoph Schönborn is an Austrian friar of the Catholic Church’s Dominican Order who was appointed a cardinal in 1998 by the late Pope John Paul II. Three years prior, he had been made the Archbishop of Vienna and from 1998 until 2020, he served as the Chairman of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference. He is viewed by many as a realistic and sensible peacemaker who is willing to dialogue.
Personal Life
He was born to Maria Hugo Schönborn and Baroness Eleonore Doblhoff. He has a sister and two brothers, one of whom is actor Michael Schönborn. Besides his fluent German, Italian and French, he also speaks Spanish, English and Latin.
Trivia
He underwent surgery in May 2019 for prostate cancer. In spite of his attempt to resign from the cardinalate in 2020, it was announced that Pope would only accept the resignation after his successor is named.
